CHAPTER 10 - PAGE 3

(Transcript and visual captions below}

As the short days of winter went by, it seemed like everyone had something to do. The pieces were just beginning to settle. So much had changed forever, and the survivors were left to band together, form alliances and mutual enemies.

Helen was glad Sarah and her ward were occupying Aubrey's time with obsequious encouragement as they planned exotic ways they'd seek vengeance on... whoever. There was still danger out there, especially for Aubrey. As much as she'd needed freedom from him, the idea of him meeting a sad end motivated her to work harder than she ever had. At least in a few decades. TV was so good these days.

She and Ellen ran through their usual techniques, but with more heart than the simple parlor tricks of the past.

In which it's good to stock up on virgin's blood when it's on sale.

There was nothing so quiet as two dead people on a still lake. Well, except one dead person on a still lake. Lucricia was a good friend though, and was nearly as good as having no one there at all. She'd been dead for so long that she didn't bother with pretending. Untold centuries, how many?

Theodore wondered why he still felt the need to move his eyes as he thought, sometimes taking in a breath of the cold air. Lucricia sat perched on the edge of the boat, weightless as a bird, eyes fixed blankly. What was she thinking?

"You've got to admit," she said suddenly, "that'd be pretty hot. You've ever been with a man before?"

"What?! I haven't the faintest-- Didn't you live through the Holy Age?"

"Hey, nothin' holy about those ages, lemme tell ya..."

TRANSCRIPT: This is the text of the comic, for purposes such as translation and internet searches.

1.)

(Aubrey has his head in his ring-festooned hand, glaring forward as contemplates his malice.)

AUBREY: Then-- Then we call upon the worshippers to rain down our vengeance!

2.)

(Aubrey is in his library, playing avant with Sarah. Tristan is bored, with arms crossed and eyes heavy-lidded.)

AUBREY:That always works for me.

SARAH: Yes! Oh, that’s a... good idea!

AUBREY: They’ll tear him asunder.

SARAH:Yup.

3.)

(As Aubrey and Sarah continue the interminable game, Tristan leaves. From the next room, voices are heard.)

AUBREY: Then, hm... virgin’s blood...

SARAH: Uh huh...!

??: So when Theodore comes around I’ll-- Ok, ok so I’ll be like--

4.)

(In the background, Tristan looks shocked, as Ellen appears to be impaled with a sword, and Helen appears to be in flames.)

ELLEN: I’ve been impaled on my own sword!

HELEN: No! I’ve been set ablaze!

ELLEN:Don’t do that one in front of dad.

5.)

(No longer on fire, Helen embraces Tristan with one arm and holds his hand with the other.)

HELEN: Hey champ, cheer up! I wasn’t actually on fire!

6.)

(Elsewhere, tank topping Vitus is moving lumber in a wrecked up place with peeled purple paint - the Sombreta estate.)

7.)

(Vitus whistles as he picks up debris in the ruined place.)

8.)

(In a drop-ceilinged dojo, a martial artist of great skill is sparring with several people at once. From off-panel, master Charles Keith comments.)

CHARLES: His technique is... Well, is that even a technique? It works, but...

9.)

(On the sidelines, Francesca cheers on the furious fighter, annoying Master Keith as he conemplates the scene.)

FRAN:WOOP WOOP! GO DEMY!

10.)

(Under a starry sky, a rowboat floats with two figures on top: one reclining and one sitting on the edge.)

LUCRICIA: There’s not much to say, they’re waiting for you.

THEODORE:It’s to be expected... I’m ready.

11.)

(Closer, we see Theodore with his hands loosely over his heart, looking soulful.)

THEODORE: I don’t know what to do about Jack. Will he come back to me?

12.)

(Lucricia looks down at reclining Theodore.)

LUCRICIA: Do you love him?

THEODORE: Like a brother?

LUCRICIA: Uh. Like a lover?

13.)

(Theo looks slightly stern.)

THEODORE: What?! No! Friendship, Lucricia. Friendship.

14.)

(Theodore looks to the stars, lost in thought.)
